Is your local Poundland store closing down?

Poundland is one of the many retailers shutting down multiple shops in December 2025 in a blow to customers on the hunt for festive deals with Christmas only weeks away.

Store closures have swept Britain's high streets in recent years following the Covid-19 pandemic with some businesses blaming Chancellor Rachel Reeves's hike to National Insurance and the National Living Wage.

Since October, Poundland has been in the process of shutting down dozens of stores with around 30 earmarked for closure as part of the business' wider restructuring process.

This comes after the discount retailer was sold by former parent company Pepco Group in a deal with Gordon Brothers for a nominal sum; savings the company from administration.

After the deal was officially confirmed, Tom Smith KC, who represented Poundland Limited, asserted that the retailer's "profitability has sharply declined" over the years.

He shared: "The group was performing well prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the business has struggled in the last two years in an increasingly challenging UK retail environment.

"Its response to these challenges was to broaden its offering, including by adding chilled and frozen products and introducing online sales. However, these changes increased operating costs, as did increases in the UK National Living Wage and employer National Insurance contributions."

While the restructuring process continues at place, British shoppers are being reminded that four more Poundland stores will cease operations for good in December 2025.

Despite this development, "extensive" clearance sales are currently taking place at the Poundland stores scheduled to close which could mean significant Christmas savings for families.

On this wave of deals, a Poundland spokesperson said: "Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead.

"The reductions of up to 40 per cent will see items marked down in price until they’re sold and cover all the stock in each store from homewares to groceries and clothing to health and beauty."

Customers are being reminded that all Poundland stores will be temporarily closed for three days in December and January, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
