State pensioners could claim £70 off supermarket shop this week - are you eligible?

Wakefield Council in West Yorkshire has confirmed it will distribute £70 supermarket vouchers to pensioners receiving Council Tax Support.

The first round of vouchers will be issued between 4 and 6 November to those who no longer receive the Winter Fuel Allowance (i.e. not on Pension Credit).

A second round will follow from 11 to 13 November for pensioners who still receive the allowance (i.e. those on Pension Credit).

The support comes through the Government's Household Support Fund, which targets vulnerable households during the colder months.

Pensioners who receive certain benefits are among those who can access this help with essential living costs.

Wakefield Council said: “Eligible households do not need to apply for these vouchers. They will be issued automatically. Please allow up to 14 days for the voucher to arrive.

“Full instructions on how to redeem the voucher will be included in the letter. Once the voucher has been redeemed, it doesn’t have to be spent all at once. It can be used several times until the entire amount has been spent.

“Please note that receipt of these vouchers will not affect entitlement to any other benefits you may be receiving.”

Local authorities have been given the flexibility to decide who qualifies in their area.

This means pensioners on specific benefits in one council area might receive support, while the criteria could be different just a few miles away.

The fund represents a £742million investment in supporting households across England.
