The UK's energy debt has unveiled new cost of living support but is it enough to tackle peoples' rising bills

Ofgem may have announced up to £500million in energy debt will be paid off for thousands of households, but MPs has slammed the efforts as "inadequate" amid the wider cost of living crisis.

To pay for "debt relief scheme", the energy regulator has confirmed that households will be hit with a £5 hike to their energy bills which the the Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) Select Committee has criticised for "barely scratching the surface".

Household energy debt has surged to £4.43billion, Ofgem figures showed last month. This figure has more than tripled in the last five years.
