Lloyds Banking Group is the latest financial institution to be impacted by a website and app outage

Lloyds Banking Group's online services, including its websites and apps, are down amid today's global internet outage in a blow to millions of customers across the UK.

The banking group, which is made up of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, is among the dozens of businesses affected by the Amazon Web Services Outage.

In recent months, banks such as Barclays and NatWest have been inflicted with similar IT errors, which had left savers unable to manage their money and make payments.

Taking to social media, customers have voiced their frustration over this latest outage which appears to be impacting peoples' ability to make payments once again.

Earlier this morning , one Lloyds customer messaged the bank on X: "App and site both down. Get it sorted I've got bills to pay."

Lloyds Bank replied: "I understand how frustrating it is when you are unable to access your accounts. Please try these steps: Clear the app’s cache and browsing history. Fully close the app, then reopen. Try logging in using both mobile data and Wi-Fi to see which works better."

The customer noted that this appeared to a widespread issue and that clearing the cache would not make any positive change.

In a later statement, the bank shared: "You may have seen reports of issues with Amazon Web Services affecting a number of websites and apps across the UK today.

"We know this is impacting some of our services right now. We're sorry about this. Please bear with us as we investigate this."

Another customer slammed Lloyds Bank, writing: "Yet another day when internet banking is down. Yet they still continue to shut branches.

"The only reason I’ve stayed with them so far is I know they’ll mess up the transfer of direct debits etc if I move to another branch."

Oliver Sissons, the SEO director at digital PR agency Reboot Online, previously broke down how bank app outages are detrimental for businesses looking to maintain brand trust:

"In today's digital world, ensuring that your website or app offers a good user experience is more important than ever.

"Failing to do so risks consumers engaging less with your product and brand, and even seeking alternative options who provide a better user experience at the first chance they get and as soon as it makes sense to do so.

"In an industry as important as banking, one where you'd think the biggest brands would want to exude competence, confidence and security in every area, it is surprising to see so much negative sentiment surrounding the apps available."

Rob Jardin, the chief digital officer at cybersecurity experts NymVPN, added: "There’s no sign that this AWS outage was caused by a cyber attack - it looks like a technical fault affecting one of Amazon’s main data centres.

"These issues can happen when systems become overloaded or a key part of the network goes down, and because so many websites and apps rely on AWS, the impact spreads quickly.

"Incidents like this show how much of our daily life now depends on a few big tech providers. When one of them has a problem, it can bring down internet access for millions. The problem is centralisation."

As of midday, a Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson told GB News: "We are sorry for the issues affecting customers this morning, we are seeing services coming back online and continue to work to see that happens as quickly as possible."
