Bereaved families across Britain face a postcode lottery when arranging funerals, with costs varying by thousands of pounds depending on where they live, according to the largest study of its kind conducted in the UK.
The Cost of Funerals Research, which examined pricing from more than 270 funeral directors throughout England, Scotland and Wales, found that a traditional funeral now sets families back £4,562 on average.
However, this figure masks dramatic geographical disparities, with some regions charging nearly £4,000 more than others for identical services.
The research by Pure Cremation also revealed that choosing burial over cremation adds substantially to the bill, with the average burial costing £6,065 compared to £4,232 for cremation.
Wales emerged as the most affordable location for a traditional funeral, with families paying £4,136 on average.
London sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, where the same service costs £5,710 – nearly £1,500 more.
In the North East, laying a loved one to rest costs £5,092 on average, making it the cheapest region for burial services.

Burial plot prices drive much of this difference. London plots average £5,064, while families in the North East pay around £2,085, a gap of nearly £3,000 for the ground alone.
Funeral directors' fees represent the single largest expense, accounting for up to 60 per cent of a traditional cremation funeral's total cost.
The variation between individual providers is striking.
Britain's priciest funeral director charges £4,485 for their services alone, while the cheapest asks just £812, both operating within Devon.

Scottish families face a £3,028 gap between the cheapest and most expensive options, with traditional funerals ranging from £2,868 to £5,896.
The Midlands shows similar variation, where costs span from £3,737 to £6,175 – a difference of £2,438 for comparable services in the same area.
The study arrives four years after the Competition and Markets Authority mandated that funeral directors display standardised pricing both online and in their premises.

"As we compiled this report, it became clear that just looking at a funeral director's 'standardised price list' won't give you the real cost in many cases," said Ian Atkinson, Marketing Director at Pure Cremation.
"Funeral directors will put a price range next to some items, some will put 'price on request' next to some items, and there will often be a list of extras such 'additional miles' charges that it is impossible for families to work out in advance."
He added: "There remains far too much ambiguity around what's included, what isn't, and what families actually end up paying.
"That leaves grieving families vulnerable to hidden costs at the worst possible time."
