11 supplements everyone can take for a longer and healthier life, according to a doctor
GETTY
Living longer and healthier can be achieved with diet and lifestyle choices. Supplements can also help Britons boost their longevity, writes Dr Mayoni Gooneratne
We encourage all our patients to aim to get their nutrients through food, but due to changes in nutrient contents in the food we buy in the shops, sometimes supplementing with nutraceuticals is needed.
It's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before adding any supplements to your routine though.
Here are some supplements that are often associated with aspects of longevity.
1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Found in fish oil supplements, omega-3s support heart health and may have anti-inflammatory effects.

2. Vitamin D
Important for bone and gut health, and immune function, especially if you have limited sun exposure.
Many people obtain sufficient vitamin D from sunlight, diet, and fortified foods.
3. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
It acts as an antioxidant and is involved in energy production within cells. Its levels may decrease with age.
4. Resveratrol
Found in red wine and grapes, it has antioxidant properties and has been associated with certain longevity benefits.
5. Curcumin (Turmeric)
Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin may have various health benefits.
6. Probiotics
Probiotics support gut health, which is linked to overall well-being. Fermented foods like yoghurt and supplements can provide probiotics.
7. Green Tea Extract
This contains antioxidants, including catechins, which may have various health benefits.
8. Vitamin B12
Essential for nerve function and the production of red blood cells. B12 deficiency is more common in older adults.

10. Magnesium
Magnesium supports various bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function. Many people may not get enough magnesium from their diet.
11. Spermidine
Supports cell rejuvenation or autophagy through the TOR kinase pathway. Autophagy occurs naturally in cells as it regulates cellular metabolism.
Autophagy also balances nutrients during cell stress so can be accelerated by fasting or by caloric restriction mimetics (CRMs) like spermidine that mimic fasting’s effects on the body.
It's important to note that supplements should not be seen as a substitute for a healthy diet, and their effectiveness can vary from person to person.
Too much of certain vitamins and minerals can be harmful, so it's crucial to discuss your individual needs with a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation.
