A style expert for women over 50 revealed how ladies can create the illusion of a slimmer waist with a quick style hack

A healthy diet and regular exercise are effective ways to truly achieve a slim waist, however sometimes a quick fix is needed.

A style expert for women over 50 shared how mature ladies can have a slimmer waist "instantly" with a quick hack - perfect for those heading out in a form-fitting dress. The fashion enthusiast shared the importance of "creating an illusion".

An expert recommended creating a 'V' shape in clothing can help the appearance of a smaller waist.

Deirdre, founder of YouTube's 50 & Fabulous with My Friend Deirdre, told women how they can look slender and cinched in seconds. With a quick trick, a woman can make her waist look "smaller than it is, more or less whatever size she is".

The style influencer said: "These are your no-diet-necessary and no-exercise-necessary solutions. Now I'm definitely not saying that diet and exercise are bad of course - they are wonderful for health - but this is about providing solutions that you can do right now to reduce the look of your waist before you start all the dieting and all the exercise or anything else you like to do."

Deirdre told women over 50 to "create an illusion" in order to appear to have a slimmer waist.

She said: "It really doesn't matter what actual shape or size we are - we can all create illusions using techniques and little tricks which can really, really help."

Deirdre claimed that it's "all about the silhouette" and told women to create balance by forming a 'V' shape above the waist and an inverted 'V' shape below the waist.

Together, these two shapes create "balance" and in turn, the illusion of a defined waist.

One way women can create a 'V' shape above their waistline is by emphasising their shoulders.

According to the style enthusiast, "stronger shoulders support the 'V' effect".

Another way a woman over 50 can create the illusion of a smaller waist is to "avoid volume" around the waist area.

Some ladies find themselves tempted to cover up their waist area, but according to the expert, "this just doesn't work".

She explained: "It actually makes the area that you are trying to disguise look larger and wider."

The expert advised against wearing - or buying - anything "waist-thickening". According to the expert, gathered fabrics are a no-go, because they have to "puff out close to the seam that's holding it in place".

An example of this is a loose shirt tucked into a pair of trousers or jeans. Because the shirt puffs out over the trousers - particularly if it's oversized - "this can add a couple of inches to the overall effect".

Rather than wearing a loose, oversized shirt tucked into trousers, women looking to create the illusion of a small waist should go for slim-fit tops with wide-legged tailored trousers or high-waisted ones.
