The toxin is heat-stable, making it hard to destroy by cooking or boiling the baby formula

Nestlé has issued a precautionary recall affecting multiple SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products over concerns they may be contaminated with cereulide toxin.

Parents and carers are being warned not to give any of the affected products to their babies as they pose a serious health risk, as they can trigger a rapid onset of illness in those who consume them.

The recall covers a wide range of SMA-branded infant milk products sold across the UK, with various batch codes and best-before dates extending into 2027.

Retail stores selling the products will display notices informing customers about the recall.

GETTY

Cereulide is a toxin generated by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The substance is exceptionally resistant to heat, which means boiling water or the standard preparation process for infant milk will not neutralise or eliminate it.

Consumption of the toxin can result in symptoms appearing quickly, causing nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

The warning, announced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), extends to parents who have not noticed any signs of illness in their baby after using the products. It remains essential to discontinue use immediately, the agency cautioned.

For infants who were prescribed the formula by a health professional, parents should speak with a pharmacist or doctor before switching to an alternative product.

The recall encompasses numerous SMA products across different pack sizes and formulations:

  • SMA Advanced First Infant Milk, available in 800g packs, is affected, as is SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk in the same size.
  • SMA Anti Reflux 800g containers are included, as is SMA ALFAMINO in 400g packs with over twenty different batch codes.
  • SMA First Infant Milk spans multiple formats, including 800g, 400g, 1.2kg, 200ml and 70ml sizes.
  • SMA LITTLE STEPS First Infant Milk 800g packs feature in the recall.
  • SMA Comfort 800g and SMA Lactose Free 400g products are also covered.

Best before dates on affected items range from late 2026 through to November 2027.

Parents who have purchased any of the recalled products should not feed them to infants and can obtain a refund by sharing a photograph of the item and batch code through Nestlé's website at https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch.

Alternatively, customers can telephone the company's careline on 0800 0 81 81 80.

Anyone who has already given their baby one of the affected formulas and is worried about potential health consequences should seek medical guidance.

Depending on location, this may involve visiting a GP surgery or contacting NHS111.

The Food Standards Agency has issued a Product Recall Information Notice alerting consumers and local authorities to the issue.
