In conversation with GB News, a makeup guru shared how ladies can look younger and fresher in seconds

If you want to elevate your look in the long term, reassessing your skin care routine, hair care routine, and overall lifestyle is essential.

However, if what you're after is an instant refresh, makeup can provide this in seconds.

To get the most out of your makeup, it's important to know what you're working with underneath, and this will likely evolve with age.

Celebrity MUA Alexa Persico spoke exclusively to GB News about how women over 50 can level up their look by flattering their features and addressing signs of ageing.

While maintaining hydration is important at any age, this can feel like an uphill battle the older you get.

As the skin's levels of sebum and hyaluronic acid deplete over time, the skin barrier becomes weaker, and transepidermal water loss increases. In other words, we become more prone to dryness.

But this doesn't have to mean trading in your soft, supple skin for a drier, rougher version.

According to Alexa, restoring hydration is possible with one pre-makeup and post-makeup ritual: a spritz of hydrating mist. "Skin prep is everything," she told fellow beauty enthusiasts.

"I always start with a hydrating primer that gives a soft glow, smooths texture, and brings the skin to life before foundation even goes on.

"A glow-boosting hydrating mist before and after makeup changes everything. It revives the skin, helps makeup melt in naturally, and gives a lit-from-within finish."

Alexa swears by Brighten Me Baby, a "celeb-favourite" hydrating mist from her own brand, Alexa Persico Cosmetics, although similar products are available at all major beauty retailers.

Makeup mogul Charlotte Tillbury confirmed that a hydrating face mist belongs in every skin care-makeup bag, calling it "an essential step" in your skin care regimen.

"Whether you're applying face mist before makeup as a part of your supercharged skin care ritual or over the top of makeup as a refreshing mist, it offers a myriad of magical skin care benefits that help [you] look and feel [your] best," the expert advised.

Just some of its many benefits include added radiance, revitalised hydration, and better absorption of other skin care products.

In addition to a hydrating mist, Alexa advised that cream formulas are "essential" for women in their 50s and beyond.

"Blush, bronzer, and concealer that melt into the skin won't emphasise fine lines," she explained.

Moving on to the finishing touches, "a softly smudged liner and lifted lashes open up the eyes," the expert revealed.

According to the makeup guru, soft, subtle eye makeup only means one thing: vibrant lips.

"Don't be afraid of a bold lip," she told over 50s. "A berry or red satin finish can be incredibly flattering and empowering."
