Throwing your hair up is a convenient style, but it could be damaging your barnet

Putting your hair into different styles is a great way to express yourself, but some dos could be causing serious damage.

Experts have shared the most common mistakes to avoid if you want thicker, fuller hair.

Throwing your locks up into a tight ponytail may look chic, but it is one of the biggest causes of hair loss.

This is according to hair and skin specialists at Aventus Clinic, who shared some hair care secrets.

They said: "Tight hairstyles could be costing you your hairline. High-tension hairstyles like slick ponytails may cause traction alopecia - a form of hair loss caused by chronic follicle stress.

"Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that up to one in three women who regularly wear tight hairstyles experience some degree of hair loss."

Indeed, information published by the University of Iowa cited a number of tight hairstyles that can cause traction alopecia.

It warned against overwearing looks such as tight ponytails and buns, braids, cornrows and from using rollers to set hair too often.

It added: "Tight hairstyles pull the hair strand that is connected to the hair follicle.

"Over time, it damages the scalp. This causes thin, short, broken hairs and bald spots. It is common near the temples and can happen anywhere along the hairline."

Another way to get your best-looking hair, according to the experts at Aventus Clinic, is to avoid overwashing.

They added: "Frequent washing can strip essential oils and disrupt your skin’s microbiome.

“For most people, shampooing two to three times per week and cleansing the face twice daily is sufficient.”

Everyone's hair is different and will have different washing requirements, but as a rule of thumb, the pros warned against washing more than two to three times per week.
