Female hair loss can be attributed to many different factors, including birth control, childbirth, female pattern baldness, damaging hairstyles, stress, menopause, PCOS, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, medication, and cancer treatment, among others.
Noticing this can feel upsetting and disempowering, but regrowth is possible for many types of hair loss. Sometimes your strands will come back on their own, although in other cases, regrowth will require a little effort.
Of course, everyone's hair is different, and it's important to be aware that hair loss can vary from person to person. So, for tailored advice on how to manage your individual concerns, always consult a professional.
A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specialises in hair, skin and nails, while a trichologist treats conditions of the hair and scalp.

According to two hair gurus, Nioxin can work wonders for some people struggling with hair loss.
The Nioxin range directly targets hair loss; with its "expertise in advanced scalp science", it is "designed to nourish the scalp like the skin, penetrate hair at the root to increase diameter and density, and repair thinning hair from root to tip".
Trichologist Abbey Yung took to YouTube to share her thoughts. When her brother's fiancée reported sudden and stressful hair thinning, she advised her to use Nioxin's Ultimate Power Serum.
Abbey explained that the data on its key ingredient looked "really promising", and after three months of using the product, her hair growth was "crazy".
The Ultimate Power Serum is not currently on Nioxin's website, however, Anti-Hair Loss Serum and more are available.
Hair salon owner Mary, who goes by @thisgirldoeshair on TikTok, also advocated for the use of Nioxin.
Giving it the ultimate praise, she claimed "it's the only thing you need to improve hair loss", adding that "you can't get much better".
She recommended investing in the "backed-by-science" Anti-Hair Loss Serum for daytime use and Night Density Rescue Serum for night-time use.
Mary also advised that rosemary oil is "definitely worth a try". Indeed, one model adds it to her shampoo for longer and thicker locks.
The experts at Harley Street Hair Clinic backed Nioxin, stating: "Using Nioxin for hair loss is a good idea for those experiencing a little hair thinning, as the ingredients in the products work well to boost blood flow to the scalp and nourish the strands. There are undeniably many benefits to these high-quality products."
They did note, however, that this "doesn’t mean they will work for everyone". Other options include Minoxidil, Finasteride, low-level laser therapy, and hair transplants.
There are many tried-and-tested products out there that promise to combat hair loss and transform your locks.
