M5 traffic: Multi-vehicle collision prompts major delays for drivers as emergency services rush to scene

National Highways has outlined a diversion route for motorists

Motorists are facing miles of traffic delays in the West Midlands this morning as emergency services rush to the scene of a huge collision.

The M5 motorway is closed southbound between Junction 4 (Rubery) and J4a (M42) following a "multi-vehicle collision".


Posting updates on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, emergency services are on the scene of the incident.

Drivers are currently facing delays of 50 minutes on the approach to the incident, with around five miles of congestion.

The motorway in Worcestershire has been closed following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle and a motorcyclist.

Motorists are being urged to reconsider their journeys or even delay their plans in response to the accident.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service told GB News: "We were called to reports of an RTC involving a motorbike and a car on the M5 Junction 4, southbound, at 7.07am and sent an ambulance and a paramedic officer to the scene.

"On arrival, crews found a woman, the motorcyclist, who they treated for potentially serious injuries before conveying her to Alexandra Hospital."

National Highways: West Midlands has confirmed that lanes two and three remain closed for vehicle recovery and to treat a fuel spillage.

West Mercia Police told GB News that officers were called to the scene at around 7.20am, with the incident remaining active.

Road users travelling southbound should follow the solid square diversion symbol

  • Exit the M5 Junction 4, southbound and turn left (second exit) onto the A38 southbound
  • Continue on the A38, southbound to A38/M42 Junction 1
  • At A38/M42 Junction 1, take the second exit onto the M42 northbound
  • Continue on the M42 northbound to M42 Junction 2 (A441)
  • Exit the M42 northbound at M42 Junction 2 (A441) and take the fifth exit onto M42 southbound
  • Continue on M42 southbound to M5 junction 4A
  • At M5 junction 4A, follow the link road to re-join the M5 southbound
