BYD is rapidly becoming one of the most popular electric car brands in the world

Chinese manufacturer BYD has announced a major recall of over 100,000 of its popular electric vehicles in response to battery concerns.

BYD announced that it would be making its largest recall of more than 115,000 Tang series and Yuan Pro vehicles.

The electric cars produced between 2015 and 2022 have been recalled amid fears of design defects and battery-related safety risks.

The recall was announced by BYD through China's market regulator, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

It will recall 44,535 Tang series vehicles produced between March 2015 and July 2017 in response to certain component design flaws which can cause "abnormal function".

The Tang is BYD's fully electric performance SUV, with a combined WLTP range of 530km and an impressive 0-100km/h time of just 4.9 seconds.

The seven-seater also has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and rapid charging capabilities, taking the battery from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in just half an hour.

A further 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles are being recalled due to manufacturing issues affecting battery installation.

Reuters reported that the impacted vehicles in the recall were produced between February 2021 and August 2022.
The Yuan Pro is described as being able to conquer the "'Everest' of power battery safety".

In the hours following the announcement of the recall, shares in BYD dropped by 2.5 per cent in Hong Kong.

BYD previously recalled 6,843 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs earlier this year over fire risks.

Fangchengbao, BYD's off-road-focused division, has been displayed alongside BYD models in recent months as the brand continues its global expansion.

At Auto Shanghai 2025, Fangchengbao exhibited its BAO 5, BAO 8 and the newly-launched BAO 3 models.

Last September, BYD also announced the recall of almost 97,000 of its Dolphin and Yuan Plus electric vehicles.

It stated that a manufacturing fault involving a steering control unit posed the risk of fire.

As it continues its global expansion, BYD stated that it would look to double its European showroom count to 2,000 by next year.

It also plans to begin manufacturing vehicles at its factory in Hungary over the coming months in a major step forward for the Chinese brand.

BYD already has a number of sites in Hungary and recently pledged a new manufacturing base, research and development facility, and partnerships with at least three universities.

Speaking earlier this year, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu said selecting Hungary as the site of its European headquarters was a "natural progression".

The brand's European President, Michael Shu, said in 2023 that it wanted to develop in a "stable country" before criticising Brexit.
