'Lowering speed limits can contribute to safer streets, reduced accidents, and enhanced quality of life for residents'

A leading road safety expert has told GB News about the benefits on offer with 20mph roads days after Wales ditched its commitment to the controversial scheme.

The Welsh Government announced last week that it was unveiling its plan for "targeted change" amid massive backlash to the decision to launch the 20mph speed limits.

They applied to almost all restricted, mainly residential roads across Wales since they were introduced in September of last year.

It was hoped that the changes would help reduce the average speed limit on residential roads, cut traffic levels and slash emissions.

As part of the new plan, Transport Minister Ken Skates called on Welsh citizens to tell their local authorities and councils how they feel about the 20mph speed limits.

The consultation process will see drivers called upon to give their thoughts on how to improve road safety in their area, either through lower speed limits or other schemes.

John Kushnick, legal operations director at National Accident Helpline, said local authorities and the national Government should not jump to conclusions when assessing the effectiveness of 20mph schemes.

Speaking to GB News, he said: “Exploring the benefits of 20mph speed limits warrants further research, especially considering the promising results of the Welsh scheme.

"Lowering speed limits can contribute to safer streets, reduced accidents, and enhanced quality of life for residents.

"The Welsh initiative's success underscores the potential for widespread adoption and its positive impact on community well-being.

"20mph speed limits have also been tested in some areas of Scotland and it has not only resulted in lower speeds, reduced collisions and casualties, as well as fewer severe injuries, but also more residents took up cycling instead, leading to a substantial drop in traffic and a positive impact on emissions."

Kushnick highlighted the substantial drop in traffic contributed to more drivers being able to reach their destinations at a quicker rate.

20mph speed limits have also become a point of criticism in the upcoming London Mayoral election, set to take place on May 2.

The so-called "anti-motorist" measures, in addition to low traffic neighbourhoods, have been slammed by Conservative candidate Susan Hall for slowing drivers in the capital down.

Kushnick believes that 20mph speed limit roads need to be tested elsewhere around the UK to evaluate the effectiveness of the traffic calming measure, as has been done in London, Oxford and Scotland.

He continued, saying: "Continued research can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of such measures in different contexts and inform evidence-based policymaking.

"Investing in comprehensive studies will help policymakers make informed decisions regarding speed limit regulations and prioritise the safety and welfare of all road users.”

The Welsh Government is expected to complete an informal consultation process by September, at which point highway authorities will be able to adjust speed limits on relevant roads.
