'Introducing enforcement in new 20mph areas is the next step of our engagement-led approach'

New 20mph speed limit zones will be rolled out across Wales next week with thousands more drivers at risk of being hit with fines.

The new zones will be primarily unveiled across the North of Wales in popular towns and on the island of Anglesey.

From Monday, March 18, there will be increased surveillance on roads in more dangerous areas, and if caught speeding, drivers could face a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

The scheme was originally rolled out in Abergavenny and Severnside, Monmouthshire, North Cardiff, Buckley, Flintshire, Cilfrew Village, Neath and Port Talbot and in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Under the rules, drivers must obey the 20mph speed limits that are in place where streetlights are present, primarily in residential areas.

Assistant Chief Constable Trudi Meyrick, roads policing lead for Wales, said: "Introducing enforcement in new 20mph areas is the next step of our engagement-led approach.

"Enforcement will be used proportionately and fairly. We’ll continue to engage with people across Wales and we’re confident that a proportionate level of enforcement can now be used to keep us moving towards achieving safer roads," she told Wales Online.

A public health study also estimated that the 20mph default speed limit in Wales could result in 40 per cent fewer collisions and between six and 10 lives saved annually.

The new measures, which come under Operation Ugain, began in January and allow drivers to choose between sitting a 10-minute presentation nearby or accepting a prosecution

The Government site detailed how the 20mph speed limit won’t just protect children, but is designed to make streets safer for everyone.

The speed limits are highlighted through signs, with drivers warned to not be in violation of the new legislation.

Following the change in default speed limit, the Government said it has continued to review driver behaviour and the response to the change while engaging with communities across Wales.

Despite hearing from many members of the public about the impact the zones have on their day-to-day lives, the rollout has continued to progress.

The Welsh Government explained: “We have continued to receive public requests for enforcement in their communities.

“These are assessed using our enforcement criteria and where appropriate, enforcement sites will be established where there is evidence of road safety risk.

“The following locations have been assessed using the criteria and will now see enforcement introduced in the community from March 18, 2024."
