The striker is no closer to joining Liverpool with just a week of the transfer window remaining

Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben, along with other members of the Newcastle ownership group, met with Alexander Isak today ahead of their clash with Liverpool.

The meeting marks the latest attempt from the Magpies to keep the want-away striker, as the transfer saga that has gripped British football fans throughout the summer enters its newest chapter.

Mr Reuben met with Isak at his Northumberland home, with the club looking to keep the Swede and reintegrate him back in with the squad, and this was made clear to him today.

It is also understood that a new contract, which is said to be at the heart of Isak’s desire to leave the club, would be offered should he stay at the club.

Isak has made it clear that he would like to join Liverpool, with the 25-year-old releasing an astonishing statement claiming: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue.”

According to the Daily Mail, while Amanda Staveley ran the operations on Tyneside, Isak was promised a new contract.

However, with Stavely leaving and sporting director Paul Mitchell joining the club and also departing, the new contract was not offered.

Isak remains on a salary of around £140,000 per week.

Newcastle retaliated to the bombshell statement, insisting: “Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his team-mates.”

Boss Eddie Howe has also reiterated this, with the 47-year-old speaking ahead of tonight’s Liverpool clash: “I still wait for him. 100 per cent, I want him back in a Newcastle shirt.

“The relationship between our fans and Isak can still be good. The fans will always react to the way a player plays.

“There are always two sides to a story. We will see where we are in a week’s time. I hope I can work with him again.”

The problem for Isak is that there are two conditions that have not been met for a sale to be commissioned: two striker arrivals at St James’ Park, there have been none as of yet, and a £150million valuation has not been met; Liverpool could only reach £110million so far.

Newcastle and Howe remain insistent that Isak can and will play for the club again - Isak is persistent in his protests against this.

As for today, it is unclear how successful the meeting between Newcastle and Isak was, but it marks yet another step from the Magpies to signal their intent.

Time is running out for both Newcastle and Isak. Just one week remains in the window, and, while not for a lack of effort from the Tyneside club, they are still no closer to bringing in any strikers.

Howe’s side have seen a deal for Brentford forward Yoanne Wissa stall with Brentford, who are demanding a £60million fee. Wissa found the net 19 times in the Premier League last year.

They have also seen a £50million bid rejected for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Wolves, who have already lost Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha, are adamant they will not sell the forward.

The Norwegian international scored 14 Premier League goals last term.
