The singer had been placed in an induced coma

Bonnie Tyler is in a serious but stable condition at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, following emergency surgery on her intestines, according to her spokesman.

The 74-year-old Welsh vocalist, celebrated worldwide for her 1983 chart-topper Total Eclipse Of The Heart, has been placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recuperation.

Her spokesperson provided an update on Tuesday morning, stating: "As of this morning, Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro, however her doctors are still positive that she will make a full recovery."

The singer, born Gaynor Hopkins, was taken urgently to the Portuguese hospital near her Algarve residence last week for the emergency procedure.

Medical staff remain optimistic about her prospects for a complete recovery despite the severity of her condition.

The Grammy-nominated artist was rushed to Faro Hospital on April 30 after suffering a perforated intestine, a condition that demanded immediate surgical intervention.

Initial reports suggested the operation had been successful, with a statement on her official website confirming she was recuperating well.

"The surgery went well, and she is now recuperating," the statement read.

"We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery."

However, her condition deteriorated significantly in the days that followed, with Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha reporting she had been transferred to intensive care.

The singer, who had experienced severe abdominal pain prior to her hospitalisation, now requires mechanical ventilation and remains unconscious.

Her family has expressed significant distress over numerous false and sensationalist claims that have spread since news of her hospitalisation emerged.

The spokesperson addressed these concerns directly, noting that relatives have been upset by many "lurid and untrue rumours" in circulation.

He appealed for "privacy and decency at this difficult time" as the singer continues her recovery in intensive care.

News of Ms Tyler's surgery first became public through an Instagram post shared last Wednesday, though speculation about her condition has since proliferated across social media and various news outlets.

The family's request for accurate reporting comes as supporters worldwide await further updates on the beloved performer's progress.

Ms Tyler's remarkable career spans five decades, beginning with her 1976 breakthrough single Lost In France, which achieved chart success across Europe.

She reached global stardom with Total Eclipse Of The Heart, becoming the first British female artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the only Welsh performer to top the UK Singles Chart.

The singer represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2013 in Malmö with Believe In Me, and received an MBE in 2023 for her contributions to music.

Her European tour, planned to celebrate 50 years since Lost In France, now faces uncertainty, with performances scheduled this month in Malta and Germany, followed by dates across the UK, Austria, Hungary, Turkey and Romania.
