The special episode centres on the year 1945, marking the first festive season following the conclusion of the Second World War.

The actor shared how the beloved characters will be attempting to create an ideal Christmas celebration, but the struggles of what they have endured remain present.

The performer also shared his reaction to the elaborate Christmas decorations that transformed the veterinary practice's headquarters, despite filming occurring in the height of summer.

Speaking to Radio Times, he added that the festive adornments had a profound effect on him, making him feel "transported" by the remarkable seasonal styling throughout Skeldale House.

He went on to describe the "chaos" surrounding the show at Christmas time, stating: "It was joyful carnage.

"The director, Andy Hay, just let a camera roll while the kids improvised.

"Then we put the animals in, and that just added to the chaos.

"James is on the back foot anyway because he’s said to Helen he'll take over the writing and directing and producing — and when I walked into the room there was absolute chaos going on, so there was no acting required, really."

"The enormity of it is not just going to go away overnight," Mr Ralph reflected.

He continued: "It’s not all singing and dancing and everything’s merry all of a sudden," concluding: "People are still struggling.”

Based on the actor's comments, fans can expect the Christmas special to balance traditional festive elements with a realistic depiction of how the war's aftermath continued to affect daily life in 1945, even during celebratory occasions.

Last year, fans confessed to being in tears over the drama's emotional Christmas instalment.

The emotional responses came as beloved character Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) was left heartbroken to find her son, Edward, had been aboard the HMS Repulse when it was sunk by Japanese fire.

His fate was unknown until later in the episode, where Edward was revealed to have survived as Mrs Hall discovered he was recovering in a Singaporean hospital.
