As much as 250mm of rain could build up in the affected regions

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain alert for a region of western Scotland, warning that Britain will be lashed by heavy rain for roughly 37 hours.

The warning, which will come into force from Wednesday, October 1, at 5pm will remain in effect until Friday, October 3, at 6am.

Its area of effect is predicted to be confined to Central, Tayside & Fife, Strathclyde, and parts of the Highlands and Islands.

According to the Met Office: "Persistent, heavy rain may lead to transport disruption and flooding."

Explaining the reasoning for the warning, Britain's national forecaster said: "Rain is expected to be persistent across western Scotland, lasting from Tuesday through to Thursday night, allowing large rainfall totals to build up.

"The heaviest rain will be over hills and mountains, although with pulses of heavier rain extending more widely at times, during Thursday in particular.

"From late Wednesday through to early Friday, 50-75mm of rain is expected to build up widely with 100-150mm over west-facing mountains.

"From Tuesday through to early Friday, as much as 200-250mm of rain is likely to build up over a few mountains.

"Later on Thursday and during Thursday night, rain will likely be accompanied by a spell of strong winds before rain eases across these areas for a time.

"However, there is the potential for another spell of wet and windy weather to soon follow on Friday."

In addition, those in affected areas have been told to expect power cuts, flooding, and last minute delays or cancellations to rail and bus services.

Where there is fast-flowing or deep floodwater, the Met Office has warned there could be a danger to life.

The Met Office continues to advise that Britons in areas at risk of flooding should consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: "Rain will be particularly persistent in western Scotland from Wednesday onwards, with the heaviest rain over hills and mountains, though pulses of heavier rain will extend more widely at times, during Thursday in particular.

"From later Wednesday through to Friday morning, 50-75mm of rain is expected across a wide area, with in excess of 100mm possible over west-facing mountains.

"Wind is an accompanying hazard from late on Thursday, with this initially most likely in exposed western coasts."

Giving an update on the weather to come, Mr Bulmer said wet and windy conditions are likely to spread over much of the UK from Friday and into Saturday as Hurricane Humberto and tropical storm Imelda could influence Britain's weather

Mr Bulmer continued: "The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.

"If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time the development and track of this system remains uncertain.

"We’re monitoring this closely."
