Viking has unveiled plans to launch river cruises in India with a purpose-built vessel set to begin operations in late 2027. The Viking Brahmaputra will accommodate 80 guests and navigate the Brahmaputra River in Assam.

The new ship forms part of a 15-day Wonders of India programme that combines river cruising with land-based exploration.

The itinerary will operate as a round trip from Delhi, incorporating stays in the capital alongside visits to Agra and Jaipur.

The Viking Brahmaputra is currently under construction and will sail between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat in northeastern India's Assam state.

The vessel will feature 40 outside staterooms across three decks, each equipped with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors opening onto private verandas. Viking's signature Scandinavian design aesthetic will be incorporated throughout the ship.

Facilities aboard the Viking Brahmaputra will include a spa and fitness centre. An open-air Sky Bar will be positioned on the Upper Deck, offering passengers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The ship has been specifically designed to navigate the Brahmaputra River, marking Viking's entry into the Indian river cruise market.

The eight-day river voyage will sail either east or west along the Brahmaputra, with 13 included tours providing cultural immersion. Passengers will have opportunities to visit up to 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites during the journey.

The programme encompasses India's Golden Triangle, featuring the Taj Mahal in Agra, Old Delhi's historic streets and Jaipur's Palace of Winds. River cruise highlights include temple visits in Guwahati and encounters with riverside villages.

Wildlife enthusiasts can explore Kaziranga National Park to spot one-horned rhinos and buffalos. The itinerary also includes Majuli, recognised as one of the world's largest river islands, offering insights into local cultures.

Viking's chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen said: "With its rich heritage, deep cultural traditions and fascinating natural wonders, India is a vast and vibrant country that has captured the imagination of explorers for centuries.
