The best cruise holidays come from doing your research

Cruises are a great way to relax while you travel, but they are not all created equal. Different themes, excursions and ships are available.

So, how do you know what is right for you? A travel expert has exclusively shared advice for booking the perfect cruise and avoiding bad surprises.

Cruises don't come cheap, so check the ship and itineraries to make sure it is giving you exactly what you want.

Think of everything you want from your ideal holiday and see if the line you are travelling with offers these things, founder and lead luxury lifestyle designer at Royal Expression Travel, LaDell Carter, explained.

She told GB News: "Think about what brings you joy at home. Is it long breakfasts, art, wellness rituals, or small-group connection?

"Your cruise experience should reflect that, but elevated: no waiting in line, no hidden fees, no stress."

Most ships have a variety of restaurants, activities and bars, but these can often come at a price. If you are looking for fine dining, for example, check if this is offered and if it is included in your package.

LaDell continued: "Know your non-negotiables. Whether it’s wellness, culture, cuisine, or comfort, pick a cruise that honours your rhythm, not just a flashy itinerary.

"Don't forget to inquire about what's included. True luxury means fewer decisions and no surprise bills."

The expert recommended ships that give you enjoyable experiences, and not just take you from A to B. She continued: "Choose ships that value experience over volume, and match your cruise to your lifestyle. If you enjoy daily movement, mindfulness, or fine food, make sure your sailing supports that."

She explained these checks are particularly useful for holidaymakers over 50, and will truly ensure you have a first-class experience.

LaDell concluded: "At this stage in life, travel isn’t about collecting stamps, it’s about savouring the moment. And the right cruise should feel like a floating version of your best self."

Looking for more cruise booking tips? A cruise expert shares key advice when choosing a cabin. It can have a "dramatic impact on your stay".

Holidaymakers should consider both the type of cabin they are happy to stay in and where it is located on the ship, as this can affect noise levels or the ease of getting around.

It is also worth learning some common cruise terms before your first sailing. This will make it easier to know what to pack and also where things are located onboard.
