Spain is the most popular option for Britons hoping to move abroad

It turns out nearly a quarter of Britons are ready to pack their bags for Spain to immerse themselves in a new culture.

The sunny country has captured the hearts of 22.8 per cent of people looking to relocate abroad, according to new research.

What's driving this Spanish exodus? It's all about those tempting property prices. While salaries might be more modest at around £1,508.67 after tax, homes cost just £2,003 per square metre outside city centres, according to Nottingham accountants Archimedia Accounts.

That's a bargain compared to what many face in the UK, making Spain the perfect escape for those dreaming of affordable housing and a fresh start.

Top 5 countries for exats (% of Britons wanting to relocate there)

  1. Spain - 22.8%
  2. Australia - 20.4%
  3. Canada - 19.5%
  4. USA - 14.8%
  5. Italy - 13.4%

Australia's proving irresistible too, with more than one in five Britons keen to make the move Down Under. The attraction? The experts flagged this is encouraged by post-tax salaries of around £2,638 - though property will set you back £3,739 per square metre.

Canada's pulling in nearly one in five potential movers who love the solid earnings of £2,148 after tax, even with steeper taxes and homes costing £3,345 per square metre.

Meanwhile, about 15 per cent of British expats dream of life in the USA, where they'd enjoy the highest salaries of the list at £3,200 after tax, plus relatively affordable property at £2,020 per square metre.

Italy rounds out the top five destinations. With after-tax salaries of £1,433 and property prices at £1,950 per square metre, it's another Mediterranean option that's catching British eyes.

It is good news for Britons as all five countries have double taxation agreements with the UK. That means movers won't get stung paying tax twice on the same income.

The experts said: "Even with high taxes or steeper property prices, many Britons are drawn abroad for a better quality of life, higher salaries, or more affordable housing compared to the UK."

The experts pointed out that savvy Britons are finding real value by picking less expensive regions abroad.

They added: "Savings often come from choosing less expensive regions and benefiting from lower daily costs in places like southern Europe."

It's clear that whether people are chasing Spain's affordable homes, Australia's impressive salaries, Canada's solid earnings, America's winning combination of high pay and reasonable property prices, or Italy's Mediterranean charm, they're all seeking something better than what's on offer at home.

With protection from double taxation and the promise of improved living standards, it's no wonder so many Brits are ready to take the leap.
