Markets across England were found to be the cheapest

The most wallet-friendly Christmas market destinations have been shared in new analysis - great for those after some last-minute festive cheer.

Leicester emerged as the clear winner, achieving an impressive 90.6 points overall. Birmingham secured second position with 89.6, followed closely by Sheffield at 88.1.


The research from financial technology firm SumUp examined accommodation, dining and transport costs across cities hosting seasonal markets, calculating bespoke affordability scores out of 100.

More English cities completed the top 10, offering holidaymakers plenty of options for experiencing yuletide festivities without excessive spending.

The East Midlands city offers remarkable value, with overnight hotel stays averaging just £58.52 and a meal for two at a restaurant costing approximately £50.

A pint of beer comes in at around £4.50, making it one of the cheapest places to enjoy a festive drink. Leicester's Christmas market features a distinctive big wheel, artisan stalls selling handcrafted goods, an illuminated light trail, and ice skating facilities.

While not the cheapest overall, the most affordable pints were found in Sheffield and York, which both had an average cost of £4.07. This combination of affordable prices and varied attractions contributed to the city's top-ranking position in the study.

The results show heading northward can give the biggest savings for Christmas market enthusiasts planning weekend getaways this December.

London, despite being home to many festive markets, narrowly made the top 10 due to steep dining expenses. A restaurant meal in the capital costs roughly £80, with pints priced at £6.50 and overnight accommodation estimated at £76.

Edinburgh fared worst in the analysis, finishing bottom with a score of just 59.7 out of 100. The Scottish capital recorded above-average costs across all measured categories, including hotels, meals and transport links.

The research highlights a stark north-south divide in Christmas market affordability, with Midlands and northern English cities consistently outperforming their southern counterparts for budget-conscious festive travellers.
