Whether looking for a city break or a rural escape, there are many affordable places to holiday in the UK

The UK has a lot to offer in terms of value holidays; you just need to find the right places to go.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert outlined two options in England that won't break the bank.

Those hoping to enjoy a city break should head to Liverpool, according to the president of International Citizens Insurance, Joe Cronin.

He said: "Look beyond London if you want a UK break that offers real value. Liverpool is a great option for a culturally rich city escape that doesn’t break the bank.

"Many of the city’s top attractions, like the Tate Liverpool and the Museum of Liverpool, are free, and you can find comfortable hotels for under £100 a night. Finally, you can admire and explore the city’s rich music and maritime history just by walking around."

The north-western city is steeped in history, meaning there is plenty to keep visitors entertained. It also has a great food and drink scene and offers a scenic setting for a stroll through town.

If you would rather escape to nature, another part of the north was recommended by the expert. Consider the Peak District, nestled between Manchester and Sheffield. Cronin continued: "The Peak District is another fantastic choice. It is a real heaven for people who love activities outdoors.

"You can explore the many free hiking trails, and the cost of staying in self-catering cottages or rural pubs is only around £60 per night."

Accommodation costs are low and there are plenty of places to explore outdoors without spending a penny - "carrying lunch for the hikes helps keep daily costs low, too".

Both of these locations are easy to get to, meaning you don't need to spend a fortune travelling either.

Cronin continued: "The best part is, both locations can be reached by train from prominent urban centres, such as Manchester and London, which adds convenience to the trips.

"With the right choices, you can have a weekend trip for less than £200; thus, proving that a memorable experience in the UK does not need to cost an arm and a leg."

If these options aren't for you, there are plenty of other ways to find your next holiday spot. For example, the UK's happiest staycation destinations have been named, with breathtaking scenery and dramatic coastlines.

The Scottish Highlands, Gloucestershire, Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria were among the most recommended spots.
