Some 11 per cent more Britons plan to move abroad this year compared to the same time period in 2024.
But where are people looking to go? A new report found the most popular choices for British expats.
Spain remained the favourite among Britons, according to a new report by Compare My Move, although the percentage of movers is down 1.08, year on year.
The biggest change came with Australia, which jumped up into 2nd place. The demand is up 2.56 per cent on the same period last year.
Most popular places for British expats
- Spain – 14.42% (↓ 1.09%)
- Australia – 10.19% (↑ 2.56%)
- United States – 6.91% (↓ 3.14%)
- France – 6.49% (↓ 1.54%)
- Italy – 6.06% (↑ 0.68%)
The experts said: "Australia has now overtaken both the US and France at the start of the year. Both countries have dropped below seven per cent of the share of international movers from the UK.
"Spain still holds the top spot, but its share has fallen. Many movers who might previously have chosen Spain, the US, or France are now opting for Australia instead."
Spain is incredibly popular with British tourists and expats, thanks to its proximity to the UK, affordability and the warm, sunny weather.
International residents are also drawn to the country thanks to a good work-life balance and a great healthcare system.
Australia saw the biggest growth, and it is another place Britons often gravitate towards. Like Spain, it has plenty of sunshine, gorgeous sandy beaches and friendly locals.

Australia saw the biggest increase in expats
| GETTYCo-founder and managing director of Compare My Move, Dave Sayce, said: "Australia’s rise in popularity in 2025 is closely linked to work opportunities. It’s an attractive option for Britons because of the shared language and cultural similarities.
"On top of that, Australia is actively seeking young, skilled workers in key industries, making it one of the most accessible destinations for those wanting to work abroad while experiencing life on the other side of the world.
"While both Australia and the US share language and cultural ties with the UK, the difference lies in politics. Australia’s immigration policies are currently more welcoming, whereas the US has been tightening its rules. This friendlier climate is likely one of the reasons more Brits are choosing Australia over America in 2025.”
