The Stickle Tarn Trail in the Lake District was named the best. A short but steep climb alongside the tumbling Stickle Ghyll stream leads to the glassy expanse of Stickle Tarn, framed by the rugged peaks of Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark.

After the descent, walkers are rewarded at Lanty Slee’s Langdale, where local ales and hearty roasts await. “It’s a short walk, but the combination of scenery and pub comfort is unforgettable,” the experts noted.

For a gentler stroll, the Lacock Village Walk in Wiltshire winds through cobbled streets, honey-stone cottages and quiet fields. At the end of the 1.3-mile loop, The Red Lion offers “towering Yorkshire puddings and perfectly cooked beef in front of a glowing fireplace,” making it ideal for a crisp autumn afternoon.

If you crave sea air, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Penally Abbey to Stackpole Inn provides 12 miles of cliff-top views and golden sands. The pros said: “The award-winning Stackpole Inn pairs succulent Welsh lamb with sticky toffee pudding, all best enjoyed beside a log-burning stove."

The experts added: “Few things capture British comfort quite like a muddy pair of boots drying by the fire, a pint in hand, and the smell of roast beef in the air.”

This season, lace up your boots, embrace the season’s beauty, and let one of these trails lead you to the ultimate reward: a Sunday roast worth the walk.
