If you've ever struggled to find the right words in a WhatsApp message, you'll soon have an AI assistant to help write them for you. Yes, the world's most popular messaging platform just unveiled Writing Help, a new feature that can transform your texts with Artificial Intelligence (AI) while keeping your conversations completely private.
This new tool allows you to rewrite messages entirely to adjust tone or correct spelling mistakes.
For example, you'll be able to make your texts sound more professional for work chats, ask the AI to add some humour to lighten the mood with friends, or craft supportive responses when friends need encouragement.
This is the second major AI feature to be rolled out to WhatsApp users, although this one hasn't seen anywhere near the same level of backlash.
So, how does Writing Help work?
The technology is powered by Private Processing system. This ensures that neither WhatsApp, nor its parent company, Meta, has access to your original messages or the suggestion generated by the AI.
When you're composing a message, you'll notice a small pencil icon appearing in your chat window. Tapping this opens up Writing Help, which generates at least three alternative versions of your text based on five different style options.

| WHATSAPP PRESS OFFICEYou can choose "Professional" to make casual messages more formal for business communications, or "Funny" to add some wit and playful language to your texts, while "Supportive" creates warmer, more encouraging responses. Once you've chosen the tone, the AI will keep the information identical to your original message, but craft a new way of saying it that fits the prompt.
If you just need clearer wording, "Rephrase" improves your message's flow without changing its meaning. And if you're worried about grammar, "Proofread" corrects any spelling or punctuation errors.
After reviewing the suggestions, you can select one of the AI-generated alternatives or stick with your original message. Your recipient also won't know you've used the AI assistant.
If this all sounds a little familiar, it's likely because these types of AI tools are quickly becoming commonplace in smartphone operating systems and chat apps. Samsung pioneered these tools with its Galaxy AI features, which rolled out worldwide with the Galaxy S24, S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
If you own an iPhone, Writing Tools arrived alongside the packed Apple Intelligence update that started to land on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices at the end of last year.
Unlike some new app features, where they're automatically switched on the moment they become available, WhatsApp has designed Writing Help to be switched off by default, meaning you must manually enable it to start using the AI assistance.

WhatsApp is rolling out a Writing Help assistant feature powered by AI Private Processing, and it's available to a limited number of users!

To enable Writing Help, follow these short steps:
- Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version
- Go to Settings → Chats → Private Processing, and tap to enable it. If the option is missing, it likely hasn’t rolled out to your region yet
- Once enabled, when you type a message, the sticker icon in the typing bar will turn into a pen icon. Tap it to get phrasing suggestions—options typically include rephrase, professional, funny, supportive, and proofread
Your privacy remains top of mind with this new feature. The system processes only the message you're currently typing, never scanning your chat history or storing any data. All processing happens anonymously with full encryption, meaning your conversations stay between you and your recipients.
WhatsApp collaborated with independent security firms NCC Group and Trail of Bits to verify the system's privacy protections, too. These external audits confirmed that the Private Processing technology prevents any party, including Meta employees, from viewing your messages or the AI's suggestions.
You maintain complete control over your data throughout the process.
Writing Help is currently "available in English for users in the United States and several other countries," according to a press statement. The company plans to expand language support and regional availability throughout this year.

- Open the Invitation Link and tap the link on your iOS device. This will redirect you to the TestFlight app and show the app you're invited to test.
- Join the Beta by tapping Accept or Install in the TestFlight app.
- The beta app will be installed on your device.
- Start testing by using the app like you normally would, and provide feedback via the TestFlight app
If you want to join the testing for Android devices, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for WhatsApp Messenger and open the app page.
- Scroll down until you see a section that says: "Join the beta and get early access to new features."
- Confirm by tapping Join again in the pop-up

In some cases, testing for Android is limited, so there may be a pop-up saying the programme is full.
