The shake-up takes place on September 22, 2025

  • EE is removing the Discovery+ app from its older TV boxes
  • The change takes place on September 22, 2025
  • Discovery+ serves as the streaming platform for TNT Sports
  • There are alternative options to maintain access on your TV

If you're using an older EE or BT TV set-top box, you'll soon lose access to the Discovery+ app entirely.

The change takes effect on September 22, 2025, meaning you won't be able to watch any TNT Sports on-demand content through your box. Previously known as BT Sport, this feature gives you access to live sports coverage.

The Discovery+ app serves as the streaming platform for TNT Sports content, alongside entertainment programmes. When the app stops working on your older hardware, you'll lose access to both types of content through your set-top box.

While it may seem like EE or BT may be leading the charge on this update, it's actually being piloted by Warner Bros. Discovery.

The removal of Discovery+ affects all the catch-up sports content you might rely on. You'll no longer be able to view Premier League match highlights, catch up on Champions League games you've missed, or access extended coverage of other sporting events.

There are three specific older BT-branded Humax set-top boxes that'll lose Discovery+ support:

  • 4K Recordable TV Box
  • TV BOX
  • Recordable TV Box

If you own any of these models, you'll be affected by the change.

Newer equipment remains unaffected, though. So that means the EE TV Box Pro, EE TV Box Mini, and the specially configured Apple TV 4K with EE remote will all continue to support Discovery+ as normal.

EE PRESS OFFICE

While the app may be removed from your TV, it's important to note that your actual Discovery+ or TNT Sports subscription won't be cancelled.

You'll still be paying for the same content through your ongoing EE TV package.

The issue is purely about device compatibility – your older box simply won't be able to run the Discovery+ app anymore, while your subscription remains active and accessible through other means.

If you want to keep app access on your television set, you can request a hardware upgrade directly from EE.

EE PRESS OFFICE

The removal of the Discovery+ app means your Humax device will no longer be able to watch discovery+/TNT content via the app. However, they will still be able to view the content on the app through other devices, using their EE TV credentials, provided they have discovery+ access as part of their TV package.

Additionally, you'll lose all on-demand sports content on your affected device. While you can still watch TNT Sports' live channels through your standard TV guide, the streaming elements disappear completely.

This includes all the supplementary content you might regularly use, too.

You won't be able to access match highlights packages, catch up on games broadcast earlier, view extended coverage, or watch streaming-exclusive events through your set-top box.

Your live TNT Sports channels remain available if you subscribe to Sport, Big Sport, or Full Works packages, which represent the different tier levels of content you can access.

You'll still see these channels in your electronic programme guide and can watch them as they broadcast. However, the convenience of pausing, rewinding, or catching up later through the Discovery+ app will vanish from your older hardware.

What can you do? If you want to keep app access on your television set, you can request a hardware upgrade directly from EE. The company typically provides replacement devices at no charge, but you'll need to commit to a fresh 24-month contract period.

Be aware that switching boxes means losing all your saved programmes. Any recordings stored on your current device won't transfer to the replacement hardware, so you'll need to watch anything important before making the change.

The upgrade process involves contacting EE (0330 123 1105) to arrange delivery of a newer model. You'll receive either a TV Box Pro, TV Box Mini, or Apple TV 4K EE Box, all of which will continue supporting the Discovery+ app beyond September.

You don't need to upgrade your hardware to keep watching Discovery+ content. Smart televisions, tablets, smartphones, laptops, streaming devices like Fire TV Sticks, and games consoles all support the Discovery+ app.

You can simply use these alternative devices while keeping your older EE TV box for everything else.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

This might prove more practical if you're partway through your current contract and don't want another two-year commitment. You'd use your existing box for standard television viewing and switch to another device when you want TNT Sports on-demand content.

This may give you an opportunity to reassess their television setup entirely. If your contract is approaching renewal and you're not tied to EE's broadband service, exploring alternative providers could be worthwhile.
