The duo appear to be no longer close friends

Nick Kyrgios has taken aim at Andy Murray, claiming the former world No 1 snubbed an invitation to appear on his podcast because he thought he was “too important.”

The outspoken Australian said he was disappointed by Murray’s attitude and admitted he no longer knows whether they are even friends.

Kyrgios, who once shared a close bond with the three-time Grand Slam champion, revealed the rift during an appearance on the Unscripted by Josh Mansour podcast.

The pair were once friends on tour, sharing off-court jokes and even visiting theme parks together during tournaments.

Murray frequently defended Kyrgios against criticism, often standing up for him when others would not.

But according to Kyrgios, that camaraderie has now faded.

“I mean, I wouldn’t even know if he’s a friend anymore,” Kyrgios said.

“I guess he’s just like a colleague. We used to be closer, but then, I don’t know.”

Asked whether Murray had supported him through his most difficult moments, the Australian was quick to acknowledge the Scot’s kindness before turning his frustration into a blunt accusation.

“Yes, he did. He was one of the people who was very supportive of me through that, but now we kind of don’t talk as much,” Kyrgios explained.

“I wanted him on my podcast, and he acted too important. So there’s your truth. It’s like, bro, find some time.”

The revelation underscores the growing distance between two players who once shared mutual respect.

When Kyrgios first burst onto the ATP Tour, Murray was one of his few defenders, urging critics to be fair to the young Australian.

Over the years, their relationship seemed genuine, with both describing each other as friends who enjoyed a similar sense of humour.

In 2016, before they faced off in the fourth round at Wimbledon, Kyrgios spoke warmly of Murray.

“It was love at first sight,” he joked at the time.

“He’s a relaxed guy, down-to-earth. We joke a lot in the locker room. He’s always very funny. It helps.”

Murray, too, praised Kyrgios, saying: “You guys try and wind him up all the time. It’s not really fair on him. When he makes a mistake, yeah, it’s fine, but he gets treated differently to others.”

Now, almost a decade later, that mutual affection appears to have cooled.

Kyrgios’s career has been blighted by injury since reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, with the tennis star falling down the world rankings as a result.

A series of knee and wrist injuries have since kept him off the court for most of the past three years, limiting his appearances to just four tournaments this season.

His only singles win came at the Miami Open before another layoff.
