The world No7 faces American Zachary Svadja in the next round, after he also ran out a straight-sets victor on the tournament’s opening day. The pair face off on Tuesday afternoon.
The former world No1 is currently searching for the record-breaking 25th Grand Slam at the US Open, a tournament he has triumphed in on four occasions.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion enters the tournament as the favourite outside of the world’s top two: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
After his Wimbledon semi-final defeat to world No1 and eventual winner Sinner last month, Djokovic claimed it was becoming difficult to keep up with the “younger and fitter” top two in the world.
However, just last week, the Italian and world No1 was forced to retire 23 minutes into the opening set against Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Open due to illness and could enter the tournament not in 100 per cent condition.
Djokovic also represents the last Grand Slam winner that wasn’t Sinner or Alcaraz, after he triumphed in the 2023 US Open.
