Fifteen fire engines rushed to Landmann Way in Bermondsey

A huge fire has erupted at a recycling centre in South East London, causing travel disruption across the capital.

Plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing out from a building on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, above the Rotherhithe and Canada Water areas.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been called to the scene, with London Fire Brigade urging the public to “please avoid the area while the incident is ongoing”.

The fire service said the incident was first reported at around 5.30pm, prompting crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations to be deployed.

Emergency services have implemented two 32-metre turntable ladders, allowing crews to fight the fire from above.

Amid the chaos, trains to and from London Bridge and Victoria are facing delays, diversions and cancellations.

Southeastern Railway said: "We have received reports of a fire on a property near the railway in the London Bridge area.

"Trains may be diverted to and from London Victoria. You may use your ticket at no extra cost on London Underground services between London terminals."

Southeastern Railway said Hastings line services are now starting and terminating at Tonbridge, with passengers being urged to check before they travel as the incident continues.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a fire at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey.

"Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

"Control Officers took the first of multiple calls at 17.32 and have mobilised crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations to the scene."

In a brief statement, a Southwark Council spokesman said: “London Fire Brigade are currently responding to a large fire in Bermondsey.

"We hope everyone in the area is safe. Local residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed.”
