Lionel Messi has provided a major retirement update, as Inter Miami have made their feelings clear on renewing his contract, with his current deal set to expire this year.
After escaping a career-first group stage exit in the Club World Cup this month, Messi’s Inter Miami were knocked out comfortably by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain last week.
Despite the 4-0 knockout round drubbing, the 38-year-old will be pleased with his side’s performance in the tournament.
The MLS side took the scalp of European giant FC Porto, where the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner scored a spectacular trademark free-kick to become the first-ever team from the MLS to beat a European side in a competitive game.

However, the story wasn’t quite the same in their game against Messi’s former employers, Paris Saint-Germain, who ran out comfortable victors.
With the tournament now over for Messi and co, the focus has shifted to his future at the club with his contract due to expire in December of this year.
Being the age of 38, the question surrounding the Argentine is how long he wants to grace the field - but an Inter Miami club source has confirmed to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano that both parties are “interested in continuing the relationship”.

Romano later confirmed that Messi's camp are "on the same page" as the club.

Messi may feel the news of his long-term rival on the pitch Cristiano Ronaldo extending his contract with Al Nassr for another two years, until the Portuguese would be 42, has encouraged him to remain playing.
Thankfully for his global fanbase, the statement seemingly confirms his desire to remain at David Beckham’s side, adding to his 916 senior club appearances so far.

The move was just his second in his career, after leaving his beloved Barcelona amid their financial crisis in 2021.
The Argentine scored an astonishing 672 goals for the Catalan club.
Since his debut in Miami, the Argentine has scored 50 goals while providing 24 assists in just 63 games.
He has played a role in recruiting former Barcelona pals Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, while they are currently coached by fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano.
