Jannik Sinner is one of the favourites to win Wimbledon this year but is facing a tricky moment

World number one Jannik Sinner has cancelled his scheduled practice session at Wimbledon following an MRI scan on his right elbow injury.

The 23-year-old Italian underwent the scan on Tuesday morning after sustaining the injury during Monday evening's fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov.

A practice session booked for 4pm at Aorangi Park was subsequently cancelled, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of Wednesday's quarter-final.

Sinner has not been seen at the All England Club today following the medical assessment of his elbow problem.

The Italian hurt his elbow after slipping on the baseline in the first game of his match with Bulgarian 19th seed Dimitrov on Monday evening.

Sinner needed a medical timeout during the second set as the injury affected his play.

"It was quite an unfortunate fall," he said on Monday night after his match.

"I checked the videos a little bit, and it didn't seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially on serve and forehand."

"I could feel it. So let's see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we see," Sinner added.

Sinner reached the quarter-finals despite trailing 6-3 7-5 2-2 against Dimitrov, who was forced to retire after suffering an apparent pectoral injury.

The Bulgarian's withdrawal allowed the Italian to progress to the last eight despite his own fitness concerns.

Speaking after the match, Sinner expressed sympathy for his opponent's situation.

"I hope he has a speedy recovery. It's very unlucky from his side. I don't take this as a win at all. This is just a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us," he said.

The three-time Grand Slam champion added that Dimitrov's injury struggles made the situation particularly difficult to witness.

Sinner is scheduled to face American 10th seed Ben Shelton in the second match on Court One on Wednesday afternoon.

The injury concerns have cast doubt over the world number one's participation in what would be a crucial quarter-final clash.

"Tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there's something serious, and then we'll try to adjust it," Sinner said following Monday's match.

The Italian's career-best Wimbledon run came in 2023 when he reached the semi-finals, losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.
