Jannik Sinner is in formidable form this year

Jannik Sinner claimed a landmark triumph at the Italian Open on Sunday, ending half a century of waiting for a home champion in the men's singles.

The world number one dispatched Norway's Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 on the red clay courts of the Foro Italico, becoming the first Italian man to lift the trophy since Adriano Panatta's victory in 1976.

Panatta himself witnessed the historic moment from the front row as the 24-year-old sealed the championship with an inside-out forehand that landed perfectly on the line.

"Incredible," Sinner said afterwards.

"It's been a long time since an Italian won - 50 years. I'm happy one of us was able to take advantage of this great period for Italian tennis."

The triumph at his home tournament also secured Sinner's place in tennis history alongside Novak Djokovic as the only players to capture all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles since the series launched in 1990.

While the Serbian great achieved the feat in Cincinnati in 2018 at the age of 31, Sinner has managed it seven years younger.

The four-time Grand Slam winner has now strung together 34 consecutive victories at Masters 1000 level, surpassing Djokovic's previous record of 31 wins following his quarter-final defeat of Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

Rome marks his sixth successive Masters 1000 crown after earlier triumphs in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid.

Sinner's remarkable run now stands at 29 matches without defeat, stretching back to his quarter-final loss against Jakub Mensik at the Qatar Open on 19 February.

His dominance on clay this season has been particularly striking, with a flawless 17-0 record heading into Roland Garros.

With his principal challenger Carlos Alcaraz currently recovering from a right wrist injury, the Italian appears to have no serious obstacles in his path.

The French Open begins next Sunday, and Sinner enters as the overwhelming favourite to claim his maiden title at the Paris major.

Sinner marked his victory with characteristic composure, offering a broad smile before acknowledging the crowd with a wave.

In the women's competition, Elina Svitolina captured her third Rome title on Saturday with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 victory over world number four Coco Gauff.

The Ukrainian's path to the trophy included wins over second-ranked Elena Rybakina and third-ranked Iga Swiatek, establishing her as a serious contender for Roland Garros.

It was Svitolina's first clay-court title of the season and her first triumph at the Foro Italico since back-to-back victories in 2017 and 2018.
