The American tennis star is one of the favourites to win the Miami Open

Coco Gauff has proclaimed herself the quickest competitor on the women's professional circuit, a declaration she freely admits is unpopular with observers.

The American star secured her passage to the Miami Open semi-finals on Tuesday evening, overcoming Belinda Bencic in a gruelling three-set encounter that finished 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

When questioned about who possesses the greatest pace in women's tennis, the 22-year-old offered a characteristically forthright response.

"I definitely think that on court I am the fastest," Gauff stated.

"People don't like it when I say it, but I feel like I have enough tape to show that."

Her defensive prowess and exceptional court coverage were evident throughout the contest against the Swiss opponent.

Gauff elaborated on her athletic credentials, drawing comparisons with fellow tour members across various sprint distances.

She acknowledged that over 100 metres, the competition would be fiercer, naming Sloane Stephens, Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari as formidable rivals in shorter bursts.

"I think 100 metres is different. I feel I would definitely be in the top three or top four for sure," she explained.

However, the American expressed supreme confidence over the longer distance.

"Over 200 metres I definitely think I am the fastest. The longer the race the better for me, I think that's the same in tennis! The longer the better," Gauff remarked.

She indicated willingness to put her claims to the test, whilst conceding the shorter sprint was not her strongest discipline.

Gauff reflected on the demanding nature of her quarter-final battle against Bencic, describing it as a challenging affair.

"It was a tough match. Belinda is a tough player," she observed.

"Every time we play it's a long match. It took a lot of running today, some falls. I'm really proud of how I fought today."

The American noted that resilience had characterised her performances throughout the tournament, crediting her ability to elevate her game when required.

"That's been a theme of the week. My opponent raised her level today. I was able to raise it in the 3rd," Gauff added.

She returns to action on Thursday for a semi-final clash with Karoline Muchova, who progressed after defeating Victoria Mboko 7-5, 7-6 earlier on Tuesday.
