The Spaniard's shaved head has become a big talking point

Carlos Alcaraz has been mocked by Francis Tiafoe after the five-time Grand Slam champion sported a buzz cut for his US Open opener on Monday night.

Alcaraz booked his place in the second round of the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Reilly Opelka at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

However, instead of his tennis, it was his shaved head that became a big talking point.

The 22-year-old's signature short, black hair was nowhere to be seen as Alcaraz secured victory.

And Tiafoe couldn't resist poking fun at the reigning French Open champion when quizzed on Alcaraz's drastic new look.

"It's definitely terrible," he joked. "He's my guy though. It's funny.

"I looked at him and I was like, 'I guess you're aerodynamic'.

"I don't know who told him that it's good. I don't know who told him to do that, but it's terrible."

Another person to weigh in on Alcaraz's buzz cut was Rory McIlroy.

The golfer met the tennis star on the Queens court during the warm-up, with their exchange caught on camera.

McIlroy, pointing at Alcaraz's head, said: "Why this?"

Alcaraz responded: "Just got a haircut that I struggled with. I mean I had to start fresh."

Unlike Tiafoe, however, McIlroy opted to praise the haircut.

"Yeah, good. I like it. It's a good look," stated the 36-year-old.

Alcaraz, in fairness, didn't expect to be sporting such a drastic look for this year's US Open.

Speaking after his victory in New York, the five-time Grand Slam champion revealed he'd been forced to shave his hair off because of a blunder from his brother.

"I felt like my hair was really long already and before the tournament I said that I really want to get a haircut," he said.

"Suddenly my brother just misunderstood with the machine.

"He just cut it and the only way to fix it is just to shave it off

"To be honest it's not that good, it's not that bad I guess."
