Police revised its Sunday estimate up to 200 arrests

Met Police have arrested a total of 423 people so far at Notting Hill Carnival, confirming two people have been stabbed during the festivities.

The number of arrests on Monday was 223, with 177 at the Carnival itself and 46 on the approaches to the event.

Some 200 people were arrested on Sunday, with 149 at the event and 51 on their way to the Carnival.

The force also confirmed two stabbings had occurred at the event, with one happening in Powis Terrace and the other in Oxford Gardens, neither of which resulted in life-threatening injuries.

Some 12 per cent of all arrests were made as a result of using Live Facial Recognition (LFR).

LFR has faced criticism for being less accurate for women and people of colour in certain settings.

Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward, the policing commander for Notting Hill Carnival this year, said: "This year we have proactively targeted those who have attempted to come to Carnival to cause harm to others.

"We have used live facial recognition, knife arches and our stop and search powers to identify and arrest more than 400 suspects.

"These arrests have prevented some of the serious violence we have seen at previous Carnivals.

"We thank the organisers and others who spoke out in the days and weeks ahead of the event to emphasise what Carnival stands for, to reject violence and to urge anyone planning to come for conflict or confrontation to stay at home.

"All of this joint effort has helped to make this year's Carnival a safer event for all."

Despite the number of arrests, the Met said it saw far fewer incidents of serious violence than in recent years.

Some 32 arrests were for assault on police, 36 were for other violence, and four were for violence with injury.

At least 46 arrests were for possession of an offensive weapon, with a series of other arrests for possession of Class A drugs, drug supply, robbery and sexual offences.

Some 136 arrests were for other offences.

At last year's event, Cher Maximen, 32, died after being stabbed in front of her three-year-old daughter on Sunday.

Mussie Imnetu, 41, a Dubai-based chef, sustained head injuries in an attack after the event.

They both died in hospital, and their killers were jailed.

Political Commentator Russell Quirk branded the event as "Notting Hell Carnival" calling for the event to be banned.

Speaking on GB News, Mr Quirk said: "The way they allow it to continue, it costs £12million of taxpayers' money to police the event... It's got to be banned."
