The Gypsy King witnessed the tragic death of Wbee

Tyson Fury’s day at the races took a devastating turn on Monday when he witnessed a fatal accident at Cartmel Racecourse, where a horse collided with spectators and two people were rushed to hospital.

The former heavyweight boxing champion, who was at the Lancashire track to watch his horse Big Gypsy King compete, saw events take a tragic twist during the third race.

Veteran runner Wbee suffered a serious injury approaching the final stages and was quickly pulled up.

In the process, jockey Alan Doyle lost control of the stricken 10-year-old, which veered off course, smashed through the rail, and struck a group of punters.

Cartmel officials later confirmed that while spectators received immediate attention from on-site medics, two required hospital treatment.

Tragically, Wbee could not be saved despite efforts from race vets.

In a statement, Cartmel Racecourse said: “Cartmel Racecourse can confirm that during the third race of today’s meeting a horse experienced a veterinary issue that caused it to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators.

"On-site medical teams responded immediately and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment. The horse, Wbee, received prompt veterinary attention on site but sadly did not recover.”

The shocking incident forced an hour-long delay in the afternoon card, casting a shadow over the track’s final meeting of the season.

Fury, who had travelled to Cartmel with his manager Spencer Brown, was in attendance to support two of his horses but found little to cheer about on the track.

Big Gypsy King, trained locally by Jimmy Moffatt, trailed home fifth of seven in the juvenile hurdle, finishing last of those who completed.

Later, Sea The Clouds was pulled up before the third-last obstacle in the Cavendish Cup, the feature race of the day.

Despite the grim turn of events, Fury reaffirmed his fondness for the small northern course, which he has long described as his favourite venue for racing.

Asked what he loved about Cartmel, the 35-year-old replied simply: “The sunshine, the alcohol and all these people.”

The Gypsy King, who recently hit the headlines after selling his Morecambe Bay home for £700,000, had hoped to celebrate a racing success but instead found himself among those left shaken by the tragic scenes.

The fatal injury to Wbee and the hospitalisation of two fans marked a sombre end to Cartmel’s summer calendar and overshadowed Fury’s latest day out at the races.
