De Minaur's quarter-final woes at major tournaments continued with this defeat, extending his record to 0-7 at this stage.
The 26-year-old, whose fiancée Katie Boulter had returned to the UK and was unable to offer courtside support, reflected philosophically on another loss to an elite opponent.
De Minaur said: "At the Australian Open I've lost to Rafa, Novak, Jannik twice, now Carlos. I'm not losing too many matches to players I possibly shouldn't lose to.
"You've just got to keep on moving. It's the only way. As tough as it is when you get results like this, you get back up, you get back on the horse, and that's it."
