The backlash comes after the star's third-place finish in the Tokyo World Championships

Keely Hodgkinson has found herself at the centre of controversy after posting a TikTok video that takes aim at Americans.

The Olympic gold medallist shared footage of herself rolling her eyes and drinking whilst a woman's voice plays saying "And now I want to sit back and relax and enjoy my evening, when all of a sudden, I hear this agitating grating voice."

The 23-year-old athlete added her own captions reading "When there are Americans in the restaurant" and "they're really the loudest in the room".

The video appeared just three days after she claimed bronze at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The response to her post has been decidedly mixed. One American follower wrote "God forbid we have fun," whilst another commented "Woah Woah..."

American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won gold in the 100m hurdles, joined the conversation with "Hey, not too much!" Hodgkinson quickly responded "Y'all are the most fun."

Not everyone disagreed with her observations, though. Some supporters backed her views, with one person writing "So real for making this" and another adding "As an American - yes. We don't claim those people."

The timing of the social media post is particularly notable given Hodgkinson's challenging few days in Tokyo.

She finished third in the women's 800 metres, missing out on silver by just 0.01 seconds to her training partner and roommate Georgia Hunter Bell, whilst Kenya's Lilian Odira took gold.

It's been a tough year for the athlete, who hadn't raced for 376 days before returning to competition due to a hamstring injury.

She later revealed she'd been unwell during the championships, describing her season as "an absolute s**tshow."

"I think when you look at some of the greats in all sports there's years where they haven't done as well," Hodgkinson explained. "They've missed podiums, they've missed a complete year, they've missed the championships and somehow I've managed to stay on that trajectory, which I think is incredible.

"At the end of my career, I think people remember what you've won - not what you've lost - and this will just go down as part of my journey, I think, and on reflection I'll be quite happy."

Despite the setbacks, she remained philosophical about her bronze medal performance.

"I'm happy for the both of us, we both got a medal. It's my third 1:54 [since returning to action] and to be consistent like that, especially after the year I've had, it's not what I came here for but I can't be too disappointed," she said after the result.

Her Olympic gold medal in Paris last year has opened doors to major sponsorship deals with Nike, Omega and Rimmel London, building her estimated worth to £4 million.

She's maintained remarkable consistency throughout her career, staying on what she calls "that trajectory" despite the challenges.

This latest social media storm seems unlikely to derail her impressive journey.
