The Ashes will go ahead this year in Australia in November

England have named their 16-man squad for November's Ashes tour of Australia, with captain Ben Stokes making the cut despite his ongoing recovery from a shoulder injury.

The skipper missed the final Test against India at The Oval in August but is expected to be fit for the series opener in Perth on 21 November.

Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer have also been selected as they work their way back from injury.

Wood underwent left knee surgery that kept him out of the summer Tests, whilst Archer returns to the Ashes fold after making his Test comeback this summer following a four-year absence.

Harry Brook takes over from Ollie Pope as Test vice-captain.

The Yorkshire batter already leads England's white-ball teams after taking over from Jos Buttler last year.

Chris Woakes won't be touring Australia as he continues recovering from a dislocated shoulder suffered during that same fifth Test against India.

The seamer's fitness concerns have ruled him out of selection for the five-match series.

Surrey all-rounder Will Jacks earns a recall to the Test side, with his previous two caps coming during England's successful Pakistan tour in 2022. The 26-year-old broke his finger during the recent T20I series against South Africa but should be fit to travel.

He's been picked as a potential second spin option alongside Shoaib Bashir, who's recovered from his own finger fracture sustained at Lord's in July.

Matthew Potts has been selected as Jamie Overton takes an indefinite break from Test cricket. The Durham fast bowler last played a Test in Hamilton against New Zealand last December.

Leicestershire leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed misses out despite strong performances for his county this season with both bat and ball.

The full squad includes Ben Stokes as captain, Harry Brook as vice-captain, plus Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue and Mark Wood.

England Lions will also tour Australia with matches in Perth, Canberra and Brisbane running alongside the start of the Ashes series.

Before the Ashes, England head to New Zealand for a white-ball tour starting on 18 October in Christchurch.

Zak Crawley gets his first T20I call-up, having previously played Tests and ODIs for England. The ODI squad sees Sam Curran and Liam Dawson return, whilst Lancashire's Luke Wood joins after some impressive T20I performances.

Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Jofra Archer will sit out the T20I series to rest ahead of the Ashes.
