Oscar Pistorius tragically shot and killed model Reeva Steenkamp back in 2013

June Steenkamp is reportedly 'barely able to speak' following a life-changing stroke, while Oscar Pistorius moves on following his release from prison in January last year.

Pistorius was once a household name and the poster boy of Paralympic sport. Known as the 'blade runner' he overcame numerous adversities to establish himself in athletics and even took part at the Olympics in London back in 2012.

In 2013, however, the worlds of both Pistorius and the Steenkamp family changed.

The South African athlete shot and killed Reeva on Valentine's Day, in a tragedy that stunned the world.

Pistorius always denied any wrongdoing. He still does now, all these years on, too.

Yet after initially being found guilty of manslaughter, that conviction was upgraded to murder in 2015. He was released on parole last year and is now in a relationship with management consultant Rita Greyling.

While he is now moving on with his life, however, the mother of the woman he murdered continues to suffer.

It recently emerged that June Steenkamp had suffered a life-changing stroke. She had been planning to move back to the UK following the death of her husband, Barry Steenkamp, who passed away at the age of 80 back in 2023.

But June, according to a family friend, has been left 'barely able to speak'.

Adding to the tragedy, there are also fears she won't be able to remember Reeva, the daughter she loved so early and fought for in the years after her death, at all.

"It's heartbreaking to think that she might not be able to remember what happened to Reeva," she told the Daily Mail.

"She is barely able to speak. It's impossible to follow what she is saying or have a conversation.

"She doesn't know her own name and doesn't recognise people. She is seriously ill and the doctors cannot tell us yet the full extent of the damage to her brain."

Family lawyer Tania Coen has also spoken about Reeva.

She told the newspaper: "It's as if she's gone back to the person she was before Reeva died.

"She was always a warm and loving person but now she smiles in a way she hasn't smiled for so many years.

"June said she wanted to live the rest of her life in peace and she has been doing that.

"She had done everything she could to be Reeva's voice and wanted to close that chapter of the Oscar story.

"She can't leave now and it's not yet clear what the future will hold."

June and Barry, after Pistorius killed their child, made it their mission to protect other potential victims of violence in South Africa.

Tania, elaborating on their marriage, continued: "They shared the pain and their memories. June could speak openly with Barry.

"They understood each other and were a support structure for each other. After he passed, she became like a hermit."

While the Steenkamp family continues to suffer, however, Pistorius is now moving on.

He turned to religion while living behind bars and volunteers at a church near his uncle Arnold's mansion in Pretoria.

Pistorius, as part of his parole conditions, can't give interviews, attend nightclubs and is also subjected to drug and alcohol testing.

He's not banned from love, however. And that's exactly how he feels these days, with the South African eager to start a family with new girlfriend Rita.
