Tiger Woods has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test following a rollover crash on Jupiter Island in Florida.

Woods, 50, was unhurt and climbed out of the vehicle through the passenger side door after his Range Rover SUV flipped.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office said Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene and was arrested after he refused to take a urine test.

Woods was alone while driving the car and will remain behind bars for at least eight hours, according to the police department.

The 50-year-old was travelling at a "high speed" in a 30mph zone and attempted to overtake a truck, according to the force.

As the vehicle slowed to turn into a driveway, Woods attempted to overtake but clipped the rear of the truck's trailer, flipping his SUV before it came to a stop.

Woods was involved in a similar car crash five years ago, which seriously damaged his right leg after he was trapped under the vehicle.

Sheriff John Budensiek told the media: "He is cooperative, but he was not trying to incriminate himself, so he was careful in what he said and didn't say. When it came time again for the test, the urine test at the jail, he stopped that.

"On scene, we had [drug recognition] experts evaluating him, and they believed from on scene that he was not impaired with alcohol, but they believe it was some type of medication or drug. And again, at the jail, he cooperated with the breathalyser, and then the urine [test] he wanted no part in.

"He has a right to refuse that test. There is a statute that he will be charged with for refusing to take that test, but we will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash."

The incident comes days after the 50-year-old made a highly anticipated return to golf during an event on Tuesday.

The golfing world has been reacting with coverage of the Texas Children's Houston Open being interrupted to share the news.

Woods had been deciding whether to compete in the upcoming Masters tournament next month at Augusta National, Georgia.

The five-time winner of the competition underwent a seventh back surgery last October.

He said that despite his return to golf, he has days when he struggles to get around.

Woods said: "Sometimes I have good days, sometimes I have bad days. Disc replacement is not a lot of fun. I've had a lot of procedures prior to that, so the body doesn't quite heal like it was when I was 24. Doesn't quite bounce back.

"So I have good days when I can pretty much do anything, and other days where it's hard to just to move around."

President Donald Trump earlier claimed that Woods would miss next month's Masters tournament, though the 79-year-old declined to disclose how he obtained this information.

Speaking to Fox News programme The Five on Thursday, Trump stated: "I love Tiger, but he won't be there. He'll be there, but he won't be playing in it."

The claim carries an intriguing personal dimension, given that the 15-time major champion is currently in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the former wife of the president's eldest son, Donald Jr.

Woods has indicated he remains hopeful of competing, stating he is "trying" to participate despite ongoing physical challenges.

He explained: "I've been trying. It's just this body doesn't recover like when I was 24, 25. It doesn't mean I'm not trying - I've been trying for a while."
