Viewers were quick to take to social media to express their frustrations

Fans have been left fuming over the coverage of the Ryder Cup, with US viewers taking to social media to vent their frustrations.

The most anticipated event in golf saw a mixed atmosphere at Bethpage Black on a bright Friday morning, with a raucous American crowd greeted by a larger-than-expected European fanbase.

However, the reaction online has been decidedly negative, with fans left rueing the coverage by American broadcaster NBC.

The major complaint has been the coverage missing crucial shots across multiple matches in order to include extensive commercial breaks.

Fans quickly took to social media to express their frustration at the mistakes.

"NBC's coverage of the Ryder Cup is absolutely despicable. How are we already skipping over shots with 4 groups in play? Why have I spent more time watching commercials than golf? Absolute joke," one supporter fumed.

Another said: "This commercial was sponsored by the Ryder Cup…this is brutal coverage."

A third admitted: "I would’ve paid a ridiculous amount of money for commercial-free coverage of the Ryder Cup."

While a fourth questioned: "How are we missing entire shots today? This is the Ryder Cup. Get it together. Picture in Picture. You missed a shot by the most popular golfer in the world outside of Tiger Woods."

Another sensationally claimed: "The coverage of the Ryder Cup is shocking. More adverts than golf shots so far."

NBC was not the only broadcaster to suffer heavy online criticism, with YouTube TV also feeling the heat.

One fan complained: "What is going on with your Ryder Cup coverage on YouTube TV? Get it together."

The day started spectacularly for US fans, with Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas entering the course draped in the United States flag.

DeChambeau used the home support to his advantage; his opening tee shot was sensational, just falling short of the green, much to the delight of the home support.

In comparison, Europe's Jon Rahm scuffed his initial tee shot into the rough, turning a chorus of boos into a sea of cheers for the US support.

The Spaniard would later right his wrongs with a spectacular shot from the wet lie onto the green.

All US partnerships other than Xander Schaufele and Patrick Cantlay were revealed holding the flag - something that will undoubtedly be questioned later on.

The boisterous crowd remained silent during Rory McIlroy's opening drive, however, to the surprise of many.

He remained cool to give Europe the advantage in his match.
