Former Arsenal star dies aged 21 after suffering catastrophic brain injury

Ex-Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar has died at the age of 21 after sustaining a serious head injury during a match for Chichester City.
The forward suffered the injury on Saturday in his side’s Isthmian Premier Division clash with Wingate & Finchley.
Just 15 minutes into the game, Vigar collided with a hard surface near the pitch. Emergency services were quickly on hand, and after initial treatment from paramedics, he was airlifted to hospital.
The match was abandoned shortly afterwards as news spread that the young player had been placed in an induced coma.

Chichester City confirmed on Thursday evening that Vigar had tragically lost his fight for life. Sharing a statement on behalf of his family, the club said:
“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy was put into an induced coma. On Tuesday he underwent surgery to give him the best chance of recovery.
"Sadly, despite the incredible efforts of the medical team, the injury was too severe, and Billy passed away on Thursday morning.

“The outpouring of love and support has shown just how much Billy was admired, not only as a footballer but as a person. His family are devastated that this has happened while he was playing the game he loved.

Arsenal, where Vigar spent his youth career, also released a message of support in the days following the incident, saying he was receiving the best possible care.
Vigar grew up in Worthing, West Sussex, and joined Arsenal’s academy at 14. He signed his first professional deal with the Gunners in 2022, progressing to their Under-21 side and gaining experience on loan at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough.

Marking his contract with Arsenal at the time, Vigar posted: “Very happy to have signed my first professional contract. A proud moment for me and my family — the hard work continues.”
In 2024 he departed the North London club permanently, later featuring for Hastings United before joining Chichester City earlier this year.
Vigar’s passing has been met with tributes from across the football community, with many highlighting his talent, dedication, and the warmth he brought to teammates and supporters alike.
