There are fears the opening round of the Masters could be disrupted by thunderstorms this week.

The biggest names in golf will take to Augusta for the 88th edition of the prestigious tournament, including Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy.

The action is set to begin on Thursday before concluding on Sunday.

However, thunderstorms could cause a delay with the opening round under threat.

A storm is poised to bring heavy rainfall to Augusta this week, with possible thunderstorms expected on Thursday.

Augusta has been set to a level two out of five on the severe thunderstorm risk scale, with tournament organisers potentially facing a headache.

As well as thunder, there could be strong winds and lightning in Georgia as well.

Later in the week, however, the forecast looks a little better.

There is currently a sunny forecast for Friday and Saturday, when rounds two and three will be played, which bodes well for the remainder of the tournament.

Last year's Masters was halted by the weather.

Yet the competition was still able to finish on time, with Rahm reigning supreme.

The Spaniard won his first green jacket, fending off competition from Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson to etch his name into Masters folklore.

Rahm has since caused controversy by opting to move to LIV Golf.

Speaking earlier this week to BBC Sport, the 29-year-old admitted he was hoping more big names would join him in jumping ship from the PGA Tour.

"I could be the start of a tipping point in that sense," he admitted.

"I understood the weight that [my] decision could have and the impact it could have.

"I understood that perfectly and that's why it wasn't an easy decision.

"The balance of golf could be disturbed a little bit.

"Luckily in my career, especially last year, I accomplished a lot and I got to be one of the bigger names in golf.

"There are few active players that could have had a bigger impact than myself in that sense.

"Not to be patting myself on the back too much, but I understood the position I was in."

Rahm also says he's got the confidence to win a second Masters following his remarkable triumph last year.

"Going back and knowing that you're a champion and that you have an idea of how to get things done and the confidence that you know you can get it done again is always an added bonus," he said.

"It'll be a little different being defending champion but I should have a little bit extra motivation too."

Rahm added: "Being able to go in that locker room and be surrounded by those players. It's a very exclusive club; very, very exclusive and very special.

"I'm hoping that I'm someone who can come back as defending champion and give it a good run and hopefully win it."
