The England legend dd not hold back on the league leaders

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing verdict on Liverpool's marquee summer signing, suggesting the £116million acquisition of Florian Wirtz has weakened Arne Slot's title-chasing squad.

The Manchester United icon believes the German international disrupts the tactical equilibrium at Anfield, despite the midfielder arriving as the Premier League's costliest player in his position.

The 22-year-old's underwhelming beginning at Merseyside has seen him struggle for consistent selection, having been benched for the victory against Everton before returning to face Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Rooney claimed: "I think Wirtz actually damages the balance of Liverpool, how they play."

During his brief spell at Liverpool, Wirtz has failed to register a single goal or assist across seven appearances, prompting opposition supporters to mockingly label him with the "007" title - a reference traditionally reserved for attacking players who struggle to make an impact in their opening matches.

The Bundesliga champion's difficulties were particularly evident during Liverpool's defeat at Selhurst Park, where he squandered a golden opportunity from close range before being substituted.

His inconsistent form has already resulted in tactical decisions from manager Slot, who opted to leave the record signing out of the starting eleven for the Merseyside derby triumph.

The former striker expressed doubts about where the German fits into Liverpool's tactical framework, questioning his suitability for Slot's preferred formation.

Rooney said: "I don't see where he gets into the team. I don't see where he fits into what Liverpool do in that system. So is he a third midfield player? For me, no. He's more of an attacking player."

When comparing midfield options, Rooney made his preference clear between the record signing and Liverpool's existing personnel.

"So if I have to choose between him and Dominik Szoboszlai, I choose Szoboszlai," he stated.

Liverpool's substantial investment included £209million on forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike alongside Wirtz's arrival.

Despite his critical assessment, Rooney acknowledged the midfielder's undeniable talent and predicted an eventual turnaround in fortunes.

"He's got so much ability," Rooney said. "But he's a top player and I'm sure he will get better, of course he will. But he's had a slow start and I think there's no denying that."

The former England striker suggested adaptation challenges rather than price pressure were behind Wirtz's struggles.

"I've seen players come into this league and it takes time. For me it's not the price tag, it's not the player and his ability," he explained.

Rooney remains confident the 22-year-old will overcome his difficult introduction to English football.
