Wayne Rooney has been handed some heartbreaking news after his son Kai revealed he will be out for the remainder of the season.

The Manchester United academy prospect released a statement on his social media account confirming the devastating news.

The 16-year-old wrote: "Disappointed to be out for the rest of the season.

"Back stronger next pre-season."

The Manchester United prospect added a heart emoji to the message.

Wayne has been spotted watching his eldest son on several occasions during high-profile youth matches.

Most recently, the United legend was spotted at Carrington as Kai played a pivotal role in the U16s winning the Premier League Shield Final trophy with a 2-0 victory over Burnley.

He was also present in the stands at Old Trafford to watch the U18s win 3-2, with Kai remaining as an unused substitute.

Both Wayne and Coleen Rooney cheered from the hospitality seats as Kai made his stadium debut for the U18s in a 2-1 win over Derby and again as Kai came off the bench to provide an assist in a 6-1 victory over Derby County.

Kai had been impressing coaches with his form before the injury after being called up for the under-18s side in January this year.

He has scored twice in seven competitive games despite being the youngest player on the side.

Last weekend, the youngster played for both the U16S and U18S against Blackburn Rovers on the same day, scoring in both matches.

Kai netted two goals and two assists for the U16s in the first half alone before being promoted to the U18 game for the second half.

Earlier in the month, he scored a four-goal haul in the Premier League Cup semi-final against Norwich.

He will now face an extended period on the sidelines after picking up an injury.

The sideline spell comes as Kai approaches a key career milestone, becoming eligible for a professional contract at Manchester United next season.

Earlier this month, he signed with super agent Triple S Sports, who has been his father's long-term football agent since he was 17.

The agency also represents United defender Harry Maguire, Everton's James Garner and Wayne's 22-year-old cousin, Jake Rooney.
