The rodent was spotted in the second half of Wales' crunch match against Belgium

A World Cup Qualifier between Wales and Belgium was halted on Monday evening after an unexpected and uninvited guest managed to sneak through security and invade the pitch.

While the game stood at 2-1 to Belgium, referee Daniel Siebert was forced to halt play as a Belgian player hit the floor with an injury.

With the game paused, the TV camera scoured the stadium, spotting a rat that had entered the pitch.

The rodent made its way around the grass, meaning the referee was unable to start the game until it vacated the playing surface.

Spurs winger Brennan Johnson ushered the four-legged fiend off the pitch, allowing the referee to restart the game.

While hilarious at the time, it came during an unfortunate defeat for the hosts.

Wales had been in a good position in their World Cup Qualifying group going into tonight's game, with just one point separating the top three places including themselves, tonight's opponents, Belgium, and North Macedonia.

And the night got even better for the Dragons, who found themselves 1-0 up after less than 10 minutes.

Leeds United centre-back Joe Rodon rose highest from a corner to powerfully head the ball past former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibault Courtois, sending thousands of home fans delirious at the Cardiff City Stadium.

But the lead lasted just 10 minutes, when Rodon's Leeds team-mate Ethan Ampadu was dubiously adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Ex-Manchester City legend Kevin de Bruyne dispatched the spot kick with expert precision.

Then just six minutes later, the visitors took the lead through full-back Thomas Meunier. The former Borussia Dortmund man profited from excellent Jeremy Doku work, with the City star sliding the ball into Meunier's path, who slammed it past Karl Darlow.

Belgium then doubled their lead with less than 15 minutes remaining, when Leicester City midfielder Jordan James clearly moved his arm in the direction of the ball in the box. De Bruyne converted the penalty once more.

Wales did fight back, though. Nathan Broadhead scored a tremendous goal to halve the deficit, giving the remaining fans a glimmer of hope.

But the hope lasted only a fleeting moment; Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard restored the visitor's two-goal advantage merely seconds later.

The result leaves Craig Bellamy's side with an uphill battle to qualify for the World Cup. Their performance, however, can give them great confidence that there are improvements within the side.

Belgium, meanwhile, now look a shoe-in for next summer's tournament.
