Marcus Rashford has aimed a thinly-veiled dig at former club Manchester United ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia later this week.

Rashford, 27, joined United at the age of seven, bursting onto the scene as a teenager under then-boss Louis van Gaal in 2016.

The England international won six trophies and scored 138 goals for the Red Devils. However, his form dramatically tailed off in recent seasons under the stewardship of Erik Ten Hag and current boss Ruben Amorim.

In fact, just two months after the Portuguese joined the club as head coach, Amorim sent Rashford out on loan to Aston Villa for the remainder of the season. The former Sporting Lisbon boss did not see him in his plans.

After returning to Old Trafford from Villa in the summer, Rashford was sent away again, this time to Barcelona.

And the winger has had an encouraging start to life in Catalonia, scoring three goals and providing a further five assists in his opening 10 games for the Spanish giants.

This form has seen him return to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel. The German recalled the former United star to his first national team squad in March, representing Rashford’s first minutes in an England shirt for two years.

Speaking ahead of the Three Lions’ next fixture against Latvia on Tuesday, Rashford opened up on his start to life in Barcelona, and appeared to aim a sly dig at his former employers for their part in an “inconsistent environment” that he struggled with.

“For sure, consistency is a massive part of it,” Rashford said, noting his improved form since the Barcelona switch.

“I feel like I have been in an inconsistent environment for a very long time, so it is even more difficult to be consistent.

“But I completely agree, I think consistency is what I need to bring into my game, and I am looking to do that. I want to be at my best, not sometimes, but as often as possible.

“When people talk about consistency, in order to be consistent in anything, not just sport, you need consistent variables in your life and the way you train.

“We have just had so many changes so far in my career but I have to look forward and that it definitely one of the things I want to put right and improve on to be at my best more often.

“When I am at my best, I really enjoy everything about the sport.”

And while his future in the England side, should he keep his form and fitness, is getting back on track, Rashford’s club future remains unknown.

He is currently on loan at the reigning Spanish champions, but his deal does include £30million transfer clause for next summer.

However, the 27-year-old must prove he can remain consistent in order for Hansi Flick’s side to consider making the move permanent.

Barcelona also have well-documented financial troubles which could affect any potential deal, particularly when discussing personal terms with Rashford. He currently earns in the region of £325,000 a week from his United contract.

Barcelona’s sporting director, former Portugal star Deco, has already gone on record to explain the club's delight with Rashford so far, although he added there is a long way to go before a decision is made.

“We're happy with him. What we thought he could bring to us, he's bringing,” Deco explained. “He's a very high-level player. He exploded very early, then he had great seasons at United, then he had years of more complicated management with changes of coaches.

“Perhaps he struggled too because they demanded a lot of things from him there. But we're happy with him, that's the most important thing.

“These aren't decisions for now. Now it's time to focus on the games to come. A decision will be made, but that's not being discussed right now. There's a contract between the clubs but it has to be discussed.”
